Each episode would likely follow the story of how Revan, Bastila Shan, and the other heroes find Malak aboard the Star Forge and coming face to face with the Sith armada. Whilst Disney are no strangers to telling darker tales, we could see the story of Darth Revan taking centre stage.Īs the player, you are in fact Darth Revan, so it makes sense that they will play a large role in the show. Knights of the Old Republic and it’s sequel Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords told a brave story that was more mature. Unlike following the journey of Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, there’s a much bigger story to tell. There’s plenty of content from the games that could be used. News has fallen silent on the movie front, but with the news hitting the internet about a show based on the games coming to Disney +, its interesting to think just how the show would work. Last year, it was reported by Buzzfeed News that a KotOR movie was in the works, directed by Laeta Kalogridis. Knights of the Old Republic fell into the non-canon category, joining copious amounts of books, games, and comics in their ‘Legends’ branch of the Star Wars universe. When Disney purchased LucasFilm, they decided to split Star Wars media into two distinct lines: canon and non-canon. They brainwash Darth Revan and use him to take down the Sith, something the likes of Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker would likely never do. What makes the Jedi Council of the era different to those from the Skywalker saga is their means at winning the war. The Jedi of the Old Republic are trying to push their strict beliefs on the order, and the Sith largely oppose them.ĭriven by darkness, Malak turns on his master, Darth Revan, and begins his assault on the Jedi. The Jedi and Sith are at war, and aren’t too disimilar. The Old Republic takes place 4,000 years before the events on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, presenting both sides of the Force in a very different light. With only a few exceptions the dialogue tends to be long-winded and sapless – more like Star Trek than Star Wars – but the concepts at work behind the story remain highly compelling, with the best plot twist this side of The Empire Strikes Back. The controls are also overly fiddly, which shouldn’t have been an issue considering the original was an Xbox game.ĭespite these problems, KOTOR is still hugely engaging and that’s because its real appeal is in the story and characters. This new Switch version is clearly just a port of those and while the almost 20-year-old graphics have been spruced up slightly the low-tech facial animations rob a lot of the dialogue sequences of their full impact. Surprisingly, KOTOR is in a similar position to the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy in that the only proper remaster it’s ever had is on smartphones. The level design is very simplistic, with little mechanical difference between the desert sands of Tatooine or the thick forests of Kashyyyk, but the game does its best with the technology of the time – even though it’s obvious that if it was made now it’d be a semi-open world title, not just a series of maze-like rooms pretending to be a whole planet. That means you’re free to wander around the various locations with your crew, talking to whoever you want, engaging in side quests, and making moral decision that tip you towards the light or dark side of the Force. ![]() In most other respects the game operates similarly to Mass Effect, which was always something of a spiritual sequel, given that BioWare did not work on the KOTOR sequel.
